The Invention of the Medical Spa

In the past, if an individual was interested in any minor cosmetic medical procedure he or she had to make an appointment with a dermatologist or plastic surgeon’s office. The sterile atmosphere and requisite uncomfortable, barely there paper patient’s gowns were not popular among individuals who felt that all the surgical fanfare was not necessary for simple cosmetic procedures. As a result, doctors and business entrepreneurs got together to present what has now become a certifiable booming trend. That trend is the medical spa or med spa. These establishments made it their goal to take the uncomfortable, sterile hospital feeling out of routine cosmetic procedures and to instead make each patient’s experience relaxing and enjoyable like that of a Med Spa.

When med spas first hit the market there was mixed response. Many people were appalled by the idea of a medical spa. After all, the term medical day spa does seem like an oxy-moron. But, despite the initial apprehension, the idea caught on and there are now hundreds of medical spas throughout.

What Goes on at These Spas?

The unique aspect of these spas is that they look and feel like a typical upscale day spa, but they operate under the supervision of a licensed health care professional. Most spas have multiple dermatologists or plastic surgeons working at the establishment to do some procedures and to provide oversight for certified, trained medical practitioners who do the majority of the procedures. The types of treatments available vary from spa to spa, but they are almost all outpatient, non-surgical cosmetic procedures. Treatments one is likely to see at these spas include:

o Laser hair removal-this popular procedure is done on a variety of body parts but the most popular are the upper lip, back, legs, bikini line and chin.

o Medical microdermabrasion-this is a procedure used to remove the stratum corneum (the dead outermost surface of the skin) partially or completely by light abrasion. This helps with sun damaged skin to lessen the appearance of scars and dark spots.

o Botox and Restylane injections-these injections firm the face and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

o Thermage-a procedure that uses heat to tighten and tone skin.
